Speculative Computer
For this project, the class read materials about the use of hands and how tools are designed to make better use of them. The assignment was to come up with a computer that is designed to make the lives of certain groups of people easier. The group I chose to design a computer for is mothers. For my idea for a mother’s computer, I want to try to solve the issue mothers face of not knowing what their child needs. The child doesn’t know how to communicate, and mothers need something that will communicate their child’s needs for them. The physical design will be a pair of VR glasses for the mother that connects to a wristband/external sound system on the child. The wristband on the child monitors the child’s vitals: heartbeat, breathing, sleeping, temperature, energy/food levels, cortisol levels. The external sound system is a set of non-invasive patches that attach behind both of the child’s ears so that when the child is upset, recordings of sounds/mother’s voice that calm the child can be heard. The mother will have a pair of glasses that show her what the child needs according to the information that the child’s wristband is finding. The glasses will also connect to a smartphone app that will provide the mother with every resource they need to help the child. For example, if the child is hungry, the glasses will pick up on it from the signals given by the wristband. Then the app will have suggested methods of feeeding the baby according to the age of the child. If the child needs breastfed, the app will have helpful guides on how to breastfeed the child, what to do if they can’t breastfeed, and so on. If the mother cannot get the child to stop crying, the wristband will pick up on all of the child’s physical information and tell the mother through the glasses what the child needs to calm down. For instance if the child is crying because they are cold, the wristband will monitor the baby’s temperature and relay it to the mother through the glasses. Then the app will tell the mother how to properly swaddle the baby to raise their temperature. Through the app, the mother can record sounds like her heartbeat and her voice so that the child can hear them through the patches behind their ears and feel instant comfort. Another accessory could be a headband for the baby that has a camera that connects to the app so the mother can monitor the child while she is not present to ensure the child’s safety from afar. Like a security camera for your baby while they’re at a daycare or playing with other kids.
